Dating with Children – 4 Tips To Guide Single Parents

January 2nd, 2010 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

Whatever the reason is, you have found yourself in the position of being a single parent. Not only do you have yourself to look after, you have your children to look after too. That is what makes dating with children a very different ball game.

Although this should go without saying, always make sure that your kids stay the most important people in your life. Dates will come and go, but you want your children to be able to know that you are always there for them as they are growing up.

Another thing to remember is that your children will be watching you, and they will learn a lot about life as they watch you and how you handle this part of your life.

So how exactly do you date again when children are in the picture?

* Keep your children safe psychologically and physically – by keeping your dating world separate from your children. Do not introduce them to all of your dates. There are many reasons for this. First, if your children have a second parent (i.e. your ex), they are probably not interested in the thought of having another one. They may even feel threatened that the person you are dating is going to steal time away from them. Another reason is that you do not want your children to get too close with someone you do not intend to have a long-term relationship with, as this may cause feelings of loss for your children. This could be particularly traumatic if your children have lost a parent to death or a parent who walked out or was just never there for them.

* Quit wasting your time – Dating does not have to take a lot of your time. If you go out on long first dates every time, you are not only using up a lot of your time, you are also probably having some expensive babysitter bills too. Instead, make sure you limit your first dates to short periods of time such as meeting at a coffeehouse. Subsequent dates can be longer if you hit it off with this person. Furthermore, you should look into dating over the internet, which allows you time to meet other people after the kids go to bed.

* Change your attitude about dating – Do not date with the expectation that you are out there looking for someone who you can marry. You may have been married before, and now that children are involved, they probably do not want to think about you marrying someone else. Eventually, you may find someone that you will want to marry, but look at dating as a way to meet some like-minded adults with similar interests to you. Otherwise, if you are out there to meet your next spouse, you are sure to scare off your dates as you will appear desperate. This will also cloud your judgment and may cause you to rush into something that is not right for you and your kids.

* Be prepared to be flexible – When you were single without children, almost nothing would get in the way of going out on that new date. However, we all know that our children get sick or break a bone at the most inopportune times! Be prepared to have to cancel or reschedule dates or cut dates short as the result of your children needing you. If your date understands this and does not make you pick between him/her and your children’s needs, then you know that this person may be worth getting to know even better.

To summarize, dating with children needs to take into account your children’s feelings and their schedules. They need to remain your top priority, and following some of the ideas listed above will help you to do that.

December 25th, 2009 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

A fireplace is a beautiful addition in any room, whether it works or not. Dressing it up is quite easy when choosing the right fireplace screens. Imagine, you could achieve a different look, any time simply by changing the screen. Thankfully, these screens are available price ranges.

The material used in the construction of the product can easily produce a different look. Whether your room leans toward country, contemporary, eclectic, or modern, you can find a screen that will complement it and work with it. The materials and finishes can arrange from antique or polished brass, chrome, glass, copper, stainless steel, and more.

In addition to that, they are available in various shapes and sizes to broaden your choices. Some can even be fixed, i. E., they would be built into the opening. Although this can be beautiful, you are limited to, keeping the same look throughout. So, if you are interested in getting new looks out of the same fireplace, the freestanding screens would be your best choice.

As for the screen, it is necessary to be an actual screen. For example, it could be tempered glass alone. You are also not limited by rectangular or square shapes. Peacock shapes or fanned shapes are also available to add more personality to your space. Of course, the most popular type of screen would be the three paneled screen, which sits comfortably on the hearth.

Whether you have a decorative non-functioning fireplace, gas fireplace or wood burning fireplace, dressing it up with the proper screen is key to having a beautiful focal point in any room. Even the screen itself can be decorated with more metal designs that make it much more interesting to the eye.

As you may know, the fireplace is often the focal point of that room. That means that the eye is always drawn to that area in that particular room. Therefore, using a beautiful screen can give you optimum results in decor by making it appealing.

Before you decide on the baby bedding theme it’s important to think about how it will fit with the decor of the rest of your home. Most probably, people having conventional likings feel attracted towards sober colors and designs while those who like more up-to-date decor, might feel inclined towards a geometric pattern or a bedding in which vivid and offbeat colors are used.

Stamp Out That Green-Eyed Monster – Help Your Toddler Cope With Having A New Baby Around

November 21st, 2009 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

One worry for second-time-around parents is how their toddler or preschooler is going to cope with the new baby. Follow these tips and nip any problems in the bud before they begin:

Firstly is the importance of managing your expectations. There is not a toddler alive who is going to feel completely happy about life with a new baby. Mixed feelings are the order of the day: excitement meets jealousy meets babyish behavior. You can minimise jealousy, but not totally eradicate it.

Drip feed the idea of, rather than go on endlessly about, the new arrival. Talk about the baby (What do you think the baby will wear? etc) – but not every day. Watch for signs of confusion in your toddler’s face and change the subject if necessary.

A good way to help prepare your child is to read some new baby stories to them. You can buy or borrow some really innovative ones that allow your child to safely explore his or her feelings about this impending change.

There is a lot you can do to involve your child in the preparations: let him choose or make some pictures for the baby’s nursery for example. You could use this as an opportunity to give him a room makeover of his own. This can be less expensive than you might think if you get him a wall mural. Wallpaper murals cost far less than traditional canvases.

The last and most important tip is to think now of some ways you can treat your toddler once the baby arrives. This does not mean bribing her with candy all the time – - even five minutes alone with you while the baby sleeps is priceless to your older child. Can a friend or relative take your toddler out for an hour to play football? There is also nothing wrong with a special DVD while you feed the baby or have a sneaky nap yourself!

Why Moms Love Their Strollers

October 23rd, 2009 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

Baby strollers are the rage all around the world, on account of the great convenience and flexibility that they afford parents. Parents can be a harried lot, bogged down by the many responsibilities of home and office, not to mention taking care of all the special and demanding needs of an infant. Strollers are a very effective means of baby transport where babies are made to sit upright and then can be taken for a ride around the park or the block so that they are amused and the parents also get some fresh air and exercise.

Nowadays it is rather inconceivable to think about baby strollers without the ubiquitous cup holders that come with it. These cup holders have assumed iconic status as they help one to carry beverages or perhaps even some useful items like keys and baby stuff which are required when one is stepping out of home. Even when you use the stroller to get into the car, the utility of the cup holder is not diminished in any appreciable way.

A lot of people think that fixing the cup holder to the stroller would be a tough task. This is so deeply entrenched in their minds that they may even ignore cup holders altogether. However, advancements of technology have made it possible for people to just easily strap on the cup holders to the strollers using special Velcro material, which is the epitome of ease and user friendliness. No need to fumble around and mess things up.

If you are a harried parent, you may be missing out on your daily jogs thinking that getting away from home is tough with the baby around. You may have been losing on the vital exercise that recharges your body and refreshes your mind. Now that there are great stroller joggers, you can just start thinking about getting back to that jogging track. Just place baby’s pacifiers and your keys in the cup holder, strap it on and get going!

Those who want the perfect stroller with adequate and convenient cup holders will find that the internet is a great ally in their search for these cup holders. Just perform a simple internet search on ’stroller cup holder’ and be ready to be dazzled by the wide array of cup holders that are presented before your almost unbelieving eyes.

Home Schooling and the Study of History

October 15th, 2009 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

Do you think that passing time in traditional classrooms is a waste? For many people, that is true. For instance, a test is coming up and the pupils are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after sitting the exam, they will surely forget 75% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do when they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world, will surely be of more interest to you.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to know the importance of historically famous people and important events. However, through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way – that is your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the situation of the world today.

However, if you think that home schooling is the most effective method for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher present ‘on site’, you will have to supervise your child’s learning development by yourself.

Let’s suppose that your child is interested in sports. Through history and home schooling, you could start by just hanging a map on the wall of your child’s room. Mark the location of his favorite sports team and make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child enjoys. Apart from that, you could also look into the history of that specific sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening at that particular time.

For example, if your child loves baseball, you can teach your child about the history of Negro Leagues, government hearings on the use of steroids, and other favourite sports during that time. Just remember that you can apply this concept to any interest such as dances and inventions. You can also have conversations with your child concerning current events or read interesting historical works and other books. Aside from that, you can also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use in home schooling, like TV, maps, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, learning is best when it is done in a fun way.

These ways are recommended for when your child is still young, however when your child is older, you must choose a home schooling program that is suited to his/her particular age group. The programs are pitched at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search the Internet for these different programs. One advantage of these programs is that you can tailor them to suit the interests of your child. However, you must make sure that all the modules are learned by your child.

Once you and your child decide to give home schooling a go, you will have to be ready to endure some changes in your lifestyle. The educational will now take place in your home not at a remote school and through the various resources that you want to use, which should include a computer and the Internet.

Where Do You Get Your Parenting Advice From?

September 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Parenting | No Comments »

When you first have children it is the most exciting, scary, fun filled, exhausting time of your life. At first you just worry about how to keep them from crying all the time and trying to get some sleep.

As your kids grow up out of the baby stage into toddlers then the parenting issues can really start to take over your life. In comparison to dealing with a 2 year old throwing a tantrum walking up and down the living room for a couple of hours can seem like a easy time.

The toddler years are amongst the toughest to deal with, your son or daughter is getting to be willful and it can be difficult to know how to deal with some situations. Most of us end up reacting in the way our parents did, or we just become so laid back that we don’t ever set any boundaries.

There are now many programs on TV which show totally dysfunctional families that are getting one on one help from a experienced nanny. Luckily enough most of us don’t have families that are so out of control. Although there are times when we all feel like the roof is coming down around our ears I am sure.

While some of the TV programs can be fun, they don’t go into enough depth to be of much use to most of us. Other than as a way of realizing that our kids aren’t so bad and maybe we aren’t doing such a bad job after all.

I like to be able to read some real life experiences as well as asking the expert for advice if I don’t find what I am looking for.
