Termite tenting, also called fumigation, is a method of treating large infestations of dry wood termites. Because the procedure is very expensive, it is recommended that there be evidence of a large infestation before resorting to this method of killing termites. However, despite persistent concerns, there appears to be no lasting residue or risk of injury to humans and pets once the procedure has run its course and the tent has been removed.
There are some limitations to termite tenting such as it does not reach unhatched eggs and does not prevent new colonies from invading a treated structure, although in response to the former experts say that is not a problem since when the eggs hatch there will not be any workers available to feed the nymphs which means they will starve to death. In addition, this form of treatment is ineffective against subterranean termites. Notwithstanding these shortcomings, the procedure has proven to be effective when used as prescribed and some states require that it be used before a house is sold. This wide spread use and presumed effectiveness have not reduced environmental concerns and environmentalists continue to object to the use of the process.
Once the tarp or tent is placed over the structure undergoing treatment, Vikane or sulfuryl floride is pumped throughout the structure. The gas penetrates the wood and reaches the colony destroying it and its residents.
Stress and inconvenience associated with the many preparations required for this form of treatment can be reduced by making a vacation out of the event or visiting relatives since all residents, including pets, will have to leave the property for several days. The gas used is odorless and tasteless and does not leave behind a residue which makes it safe for humans and pets so long as they do not return to the property until after the tent has been removed and the supervising expert gives the all clear.
Given the extensive and time consuming preparations needed to use fumigation, as well as its cost, and environmental concerns, some experts say it should be used as a last resort. However, some states mandate that it be used as a first choice and so those faced with a dry wood termites infestation will want to consult with several experts in pest control to decide how best to proceed.

Most people are clueless about how to begin the restoration work of their houses and the magnitude of the task can easily intimidate anyone. Here are some tips to aid you to develop some specific ideas, which can simplify the process greatly.
The first job is to understand what changes are required to be made, and for this you can take help from designs on exhibit in stores and from pictures in magazines on interior decoration that can give you ideas as well as inspiration for your project. For their homes, several customers go for an old fashioned European design, or a natural decor with indoor plants and jute and cane furniture, or a Moroccan inspired decor with ornate designs in furniture and on carpets. You can also adopt ideas from Feng Shui, which help generate positive energy inside the house and make your living relaxing and peaceful.
Once you have broad ideas of what changes you have to make, you must consult an interior designer who can develop upon your line of thought. The direction in which your house faces (north, south, east, west) is termed its exposure. This fact is of utmost importance in planning your garden. First of all, you will have to locate plants that will grow successfully in shaded areas according to the exposure; secondly, the position of shade trees will be most satisfactory if you determine before planting the spots where they will do the most good.
Generally speaking, a house whose front faces southeast is best adapted for the American type of home landscape. A more detailed discussion of this subject, will appear in a succeeding chapter.
Surroundings
Just as individuals are apt to reflect the habits and characteristics of their environment, landscape design should to some extent conform to the standards set by the surrounding area. This statement holds true only if the general surroundings happen to be pleasant. If, however, the land adjoining or close by to yours happens to be an eyesore, your landscape plan will emphasize seclusion and try to block off the undesirable view.
Soil
Your choice of design and of plants will also be controlled by the soil. For our purposes the two most important types of soil are (a) acid ( sour) and (b) alkaline ( sweet). The easiest thing to do is to work only with those plants that are best suited for your particular soil. However, some plants are so attractive and so well suited to home landscaping that you will feel it is worthwhile to change the type of soil in a part of the property to accommodate them. In fact, this practice is so common today that it is all but taken for granted.
You must also consider whether your soil is wet or dry. Poorly drained, wet soil is among the worst calamities that can befall any home gardener; stagnant water renders soil all but useless. Other wet soils produce good results because they have excellent aeration.
At the opposite end of the scale are the very dry soils ranging all the way to desert conditions. Here, of course, the list of plants that can be used is severely limited. Fortunately, the characteristic architecture of homes in arid regions is also limited and the plants that are in keeping with the climate and soil conditions also go well with the architecture. So, it is important for them to know all the great indoor plants.
Just as acid soil can be made alkaline, and vice versa, we have worked out ways to handle certain natural forces so that they are not too damaging to our efforts to beautify the landscape. The home gardener in Texas, for example, knows that their main problem is to sustain landscape plants successfully through the hot, dry season. To do this they apply a mulch which keeps the soil cooler and conserves its moisture for a longer period. As a result of such practices, there are in the nation’s hot, dry sections beautiful home landscapes that “defy” nature.

Redoing your bathrooms is an important step in modernizing your home. Your bathrooms are heavily used and it is important to give a lot of thought to their design. You also want to keep them clean. After all, you dont want to be embarrassed every time a guest uses one of your bathrooms.
When thinking about the design of your bathrooms, you need to consider what the rooms around it look like. Generally you want the bathrooms to have a similar style to the other rooms. If your house is a very modern looking home with modern furniture and appliances, you want your bathrooms to have a similar look. Likewise, a home that is older and a more classic style will need bathrooms that reflect that look.
One of the first things anyone sees when they walk in a bathroom is the walls and the color and design on the walls. If the color is off, there is little you can do to save the bathroom. As an example, a bathroom painted a bright yellow will look odd if that color is nowhere else in the house. In the guest bathroom especially, you need to match colors with the other colors in the rooms on the main floor. If you are looking for daring and exciting colors, it is advised to use them in one of the upstairs bathrooms.
Tile is a popular choice for bathroom floors and walls and this is because it is durable and can be made waterproof. For a room that gets as much use as a bathroom, picking tile is a smart choice that many people make. There are however, many different types of tile to choose from and each of them had different pluses and minuses.
When picking a tile, you need to decide how much you want to spend, as there are many different price ranges. Tile comes with many different surface textures and this will influence the price and the look of your bathroom. You need to plan carefully so that you choose the type of tile that has the right color and design to go along with the rest of your bathroom.

Wind power electricity is not a new phenomenon. Wind farms have been generating power for public utility companies for nearly three decades. It isn’t until recently with worldwide economic collapse and a new realization of the finite nature of fossil fuels that government’s world wide are paying closer attention to this energy source.
The world’s largest wind power farm is located in the United States, in the State of Texas. The Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center is the largest in the world with over 420 wind turbines. Experts maintain that the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center can produce enough electricity to power over 200,000 homes annually. Once the energy is produced, federal, state and local governments are more than happy to buy to produced energy. Wind power electricity is not the only solution to the energy problem. Because wind is an intermittent power source it needs to be combined with other power sources like solar and even gas or coal.
Denmark and the United Kingdom have taken major steps in including wind power into their nation’s energy plans for the future. Australia has approximately 42 wind farms with it’s largest farm, Lake Bonney Wind Farm, dolling out an estimated 230 MW of power annually. Other countries stepping up to the plate include Morocco, Japan, India, Brazil and the Philippines.
Research, development and investment in wind power has primarily come from private sources. Private investment and venture capitalism has set the ball rolling with wind energy production and is now reaping the benefits of government rebates and tax breaks. Now that alternative energy has become a top focus for politicians, more money will begin to flow to implementation efforts.
A sizeable amount of the world’s energy can come from wind power electricity. Energy production has been focuses on oil for obvious economical and political purposes. With the world in a recession combining wind energy with other alternative sources is going to save money, the planet and create jobs.
Many are making energy production personal with the use of small wind turbines. Rebates, tax, credits and low interest government loans are available in the United States to aid small wind turbine projects. Participants of these projects have been farms, hotels, homes and schools.
Wind energy and alternative energy sources will work best when understood on both macro and micro scales. Small and mid size organizations might benefit more from a small wind turbine as opposed to depending on the power company to secure alternative energies for them. We need to create alternative energy on a small scale and demand that this trend be replicated on the larger scale.

Delta woodworking power tools have been in the market since 1919 when the company began it first business in Herbert Tautz’s garage in Wisconsin. Delta power tools today are known for their durability, reliability, and power. From its humble yet significant start, the Delta power tool company has branched out into the portable or cordless tool market, with having the same top quality of its powerful stationary tools.
Herbert Tautz vision of his tools revolutionizing and bring simplification and efficiency to the woodworking man’s job is now a reality. His innovative ideas and creative craftsmanship has made Delta woodworking tools garner many awards and accolades in the power tool segment. His company has continued to produce and incorporate many pioneering advances that be found in most of today’s tools. Having learned from experience from many years of tool production and repair, Delta built a reputation as a company that produced woodworking power tools that were safe and easy to use, as well as being tools that were unquestionably unmatched in performance.
The Delta woodworking tools are divided into two segments: the stationary tools and portable tools or “Shopmaster power tools”. Comprising the stationary tool line are the heavy duty table saws, planers, and other major woodworking tools. While the Shopmaster line of tools include the top saws, planers, compressors, and cordless tools.
Delta Machinery, Inc. which was then named Delta-Milwaukee was bought by Rockwell Manufacturing in 1945. Through the passing years, Rockwell became a major manufacturer of stationary and woodworking machinery and expanded into the more businesses by acquiring Walker-Turner and Crescent Machine Company. Delta’s first commercial success came with the introduction of the first 10″ saw, known as the Unisaw Cabinet Saw. A few years later, it again set the standard with its 14″ band saw. Its design has been copied by most competitors’ band saws. In 1981, it was sold to Pentair and regained its single known brand name – Delta. In 2004, Delta was bought by the giant tool manufacturer Black and Decker.
Delta woodworking power tools are in essence all about strength and durability, but in all fairness, all power tools no matter how great and superior they are will at some point in their use break down, and may need replacement’s for its consumable parts. This is where the ingenuity of the Delta replacement tool parts comes in. Each replacement part is as reliable as the original part of the machinery as the day it came out of the assembly line. Delta replacement parts are guaranteed to be as durable and efficient as the worn out or broken part with having undergone a rigorous and stringent manufacturing process inherent in all Delta machinery.

The poet was right when he wrote: Lives there a man with soul so dead… Who never to himself hath said, ” This is my own, my native land …. ? ”
He quite well could have been thinking of his garden. Every tree, shrub and flower takes on added beauty when it is our own. Like the volunteer sunflower seed dropped by the birds that came up in front of my bedroom window. It became a mass of yellow flowers, and grew to the top of the gable. After blooming it was three or four inches across at the base, and it took an ax to cut it down.
Everyone’s children, or the grandchildren, or their dog or whatever happens to be their greatest interest at the time… is prettier, smarter, or something better than what anyone else has. Other peoples brats are cherubs in the eyes of their own moms and dads.
Sometimes I am suspicious that perhaps I am not quite normal. You see, I never just happen to have some pictures of the kids, and Ive had no operation to talk about. But do let me tell you about our chrysanthemums.
I’ve mentioned how some of the plants had withstood dry weather, especially the petunias. Along the garden walks we alternated these with mums. From late fall until frost they were eye-filling, to say the least.
But the ones in front of the house became a traffic hazard. Motorists would be quietly zooming along, minding their own business… we suppose… when they caught a flash of massed color in our yard. Suddenly they would slow down to get a better look. The car behind was trapped. Nothing short of a brake-squealing stop would keep it from hitting the car in front.
Sometimes we would have a half dozen cars lined up. One day I was even conscious of a florists delivery truck pausing to gaze. Fortunately there were never any casualties.
To get the complete picture, and the effect referred to above, lets go back a bit. Our house faces south, and in front of the double windows is a planter. To the east of the office comes the garage, and it originally had a matching pair of double windows.
When the greenhouse was added one of these windows was cut down to floor level to make an entrance. The foundation for the greenhouse was made of cement blocks topped off with bricks, and in front on both sides, brick planter boxes were built up to just below where the glass begins.
For several seasons we had satisfactory results with petunias, pansies, etc. But we decided to plan a whole season ahead. The preceding fall we put towards the front, for early blooming, a row of species tulips (Kaufmanniana). In the back row we had Red tulips, which bloomed next. Between we alternated pink, blue and white hyacinths. These came along while the red tulips were still blooming away.
This was done in the planters along both sides of the greenhouse, as well as in front of the office window. These bulbs did exceptionally well. As the foliage was dying back we put in coleus. Then we added started petunia plants, alternating with rooted chrysanthemums. In front of these we set out some potted plants of pink-blossomed trailing geraniums.
As the mums grew and needed room, we pinched back the coleus and the petunias. Of course the mums were also pinched to make bushy spreading plants. By blooming time the mums, all dwarf low growing varieties, were solid. We had alternated white, lavender, salmon and golden yellow.
Whew! What a sight! Those yellows were so bright I sometimes wondered if they didnt make the sun envious. We had continuous bloom from the early tulips, until after the garden mums were frozen, for the south location protected these for several weeks of extra blooming.
As you may gather, we sort of liked the idea of these masses of colors. Needless to say we will repeat it this season. I am thinking of starting more mums and growing them in pots in the back yard during the summer or build a backyard bridge. Then at blooming time I will line them out along the rest of the house front, where earlier plants have finished blooming.
There is still time to get mums started. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much as we do. You’ll find so many beautiful ones, that it is hard to decide which ones to select.

Carports that need to fit properly in a limited space can usually only be a lean to carports which is also called single slope carports or a flat roof carports. When choosing a carport that is attached to your house you might want to consider a single slope carport (lean to carports). If the only practical location for your carport is adjacent to your house or another existing structure such as a storage building then you might find yourself limited in the type of carport you are able to build.
Any carport with either a gable roof or shed roof might not work for a few reason reasons. The first reason is space available to build the carport. Both shed roof carports and gable roof carports need considerably larger space to be at a proper angle for water runoff and to look proportional to the height of the walls. Any less than a certain minimum amount of space just won’t work. You simply can’t crunch gable roof carports into small spaces. Another reason is aesthetic. The flow of the roof lines may look awkward. A strong delineation between house and carport takes away from the attractiveness of your house. You want your home and new carport to look as though they blend together naturally. A carport that looks stuck to the side of your house as an afterthought will not bring any satisfaction.
Lean to carports or single slope car carports tend to look more natural and blended into your home than a flat roof carport. Matching the pitch of the roofs is very important. If the roof lines march then the two roofs look like they are meant to be together. If you are considering adding a carport that has a roof at a different angle than the angle on the roof on your home do yourself a big favor. Take a picture of your current home and print off two copies. Draw a carport addition with the same pitch roof as your house and then draw a carport addition with a different pitch than the pitch of your house. The difference in appearance is clear to see.
Flat roof carports have one advantage over the other types of carports. Using the flat roof as a base for a second story addition be it a deck or screened in porch or fully fledged extra bedroom is a great idea. It is made even easier if there is a pre-existing window that would over look the new carport. Changing this window into a doorway is an easy and inexpensive proposition. In order to support a deck the supporting posts in the carport would need to carry extra load.
You don’t need to make the roof into a deck right away. Perhaps you don’t have the money to make a deck this year. If you think you might consider utilizing the top of the flat roof in the future then you need to calculate the potential load and build the supporting posts accordingly.
In conclusion, think seriously about what type of carport roof is suitable for your existing house, suitable for the location, and suitable for your purposes. Also consider what type of carport would suit your neighborhood. You want to build something that pleases your neighbors. It may well be that you will be best served with a lean to carport or a single slope carport.

Americans spend tremendous amounts of money on electrical capacity, and moving electricity from a power plant to the home involves a lot of transmission waste, waste that you’re paying for. You’re also paying for the hidden environmental and sunk costs on power generation plants as well. Learning how to save electricity will get more of your hard earned dollars back in your bank accounts while learning how to capture and use solar energy in your home.
First, when it comes to saving energy, start with the big ticket items. For most households, the biggest draw on their electric bill comes from the refrigerator and air conditioner, followed by the water heater. All of these can be upgraded to save electricity, with energy star certified appliances. Air conditioners can be replaced with evaporative coolers in a lot of places, and there are plenty of good do it yourself kits for making solar water heaters.
Becoming more informed on how to save energy is only the beginning. Making your own source of solar power is the next piece of the puzzle. Contrary to popular belief, making your own solar power at home is not as expensive as people think. With more importance being put on being more environmentally conscious there are great methods out there to produce your own solar power from home allowing you to spend a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand.
People are now becoming more and more aware of the idea of solar energy and the possiblity of it being used for your home. The photoelectric effect is what solar energy relys on for generating its power. This is a phenomenon in which electrons are emitted from matter after the absorption of energy from visible sun light. This all may sound a little intimidating but is actually quite fascinating and with some help along the way can be easiely achieved by the average indvidual.
Solar panels are not only known to use sunlight and convert it into usable energy, but can also store extra energy for use at later time as it is needed. There are plenty of new systems out there that are not only used as a single system to convert energy but also duel systems to serve multiple purposes that can all save a lot of money. A lot of this information is new to the average individual but with a little research people are becoming more open to the ideas and realizing it can be done for a relatively inexpensive price.
Solar systems are not cheap but having said that they are also not as costly as people tend to think. The electrical bill for most American and Canadians is one of the top three bills that weigh heavily on our wallets. Why not invest in something that can eliminate those bills all together or at least significantly reduce the costs? Getting your own solar power system does not have to be done all in one day, you can always do it step by step until you have achieved your desired reduction in costs and this reduction can be seen in as little as a year!
There’s more to solar energy and learning how to save electricity than this ” this article is just the highlights, and the bare beginnings. Going into renewable energy offers a lot of benefits; generate enough of it, and you’ll be selling excess capacity back to your power company. Beyond this, you also get the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping to mitigate our species footprint on the planet, keeping it in better shape for our children.
